О книге В.Мосса "Александр II и его время. Повествование об истории России в эпоху Александра II, Толстого и Достоевского"

Появившаяся меньше года назад в сети монография американского исследователя Вальтера Мосса "Александр II и его время. Повествование об истории России в эпоху Александра II, Толстого и Достоевского" (Alexander II and His Times: A Narrative History of Russia in the Age of Alexander II, Tolstoy, and Dostoevsky)) примечательна во многих отношениях. Во-первых, она нова и оригинальна в своем широком подходе к эпохе, объединяющем анализ политических событий и персоналии крупнейших писателей и мыслителей, воплотивших мироощущение современников, их тревоги, надежды, устремления.
Во-вторых это, в сущности, первое подобного масштаба исследование по истории России XIX в., вышедшее в электронной версии задолго до "бумажной" публикации (которая сейчас готовится к выходу в Лондоне (Wimbeledon Publishing Company)). Причем, это не просто воспроизведение текста, но и сотни ссылок на иллюстративные и другие материалы, карты, указатель Кто есть кто? и краткая хронологическая таблица.
Выведенное в заголовок определение "повествование об истории" (a narrative history) - это не только характеристика авторского стиля изложения материала, увлекательного и образного не в ущерб научности, это и метод, ставящий во главу угла повествование - рассуждения, высказывания, мнения современников Александра II о своем бурном времени; представляющий его как ось ось исследования. В итоге, история, предлагаемая читателю, становится не столько политической, экономической или литературной, сколько историей повседневности, создающей из "полифонии" отдельных судеб образ времени в целом. Этому соответствует и широкое использование источников личного происхождения - дневников, мемуаров, переписки самых различных деятелей эпохи. Кроме вынесенных в заглавие Л.Н.Толстого, Ф.М.Достоевского и самого императора Александра, автор останавливается на таких личностях, как С.М.Соловьев, А.И.Тургенев, М.А.Бакунин, Н.А.Некрасов, А.И.Герцен, Н.П.Огарев, С.Перовская, А.И.Желябов, В.С.Соловьев.
Родившись из материалов учебного курса, книга, думается, является оригинальным по жанру и подходу исследованием и взгляд "со стороны" на традиционные темы отечественной историографии будет интересен историкам не только зарубежным но и российским.
